Best Outdoor Toys for Kids
In no particular order, here is your gift guide for outdoor toys for kids of all ages.
Fishing Pole
We have a few of these fishing poles. They hold up well. The pole is about 5 feet tall and it comes with a reel.
If you have a little fishermen, maybe you’ll want a smaller pole. Or one that can collapse down for easy carrying. This one also comes with a little tool box and lures.
Basketball Hoop
Basketball hoops can be a hit or miss. Like trampolines, sometimes your kids will love it and play every day. And then sometimes they like it for about a year, then it just sits there and takes up space.
The price ranges from about $90 to a couple hundred dollars. This one is less than $100 and right now it has a $10 off coupon. It has 6 height adjustments and has the option to be filled with sand or water.
Bike
Finding a good bike can be hard. Amazon has so many options that you’ll be able to find one to fit your kiddos needs. This bike has the option for 2 handle brakes or 1 and a training wheels option.
Scooter
We have had so many scooters. We bought a cute little 3 wheeled scooter at a garage sale one time. It had 2 wheels in the back and one in the front. We noticed that this style scooter didn’t work for that kiddo. So we got a little red scooter that had 2 wheels in the front and one in the back. That worked much better.
We’ve also had some Razor Scooters that have lasted for about 5 years for one kiddo and a couple for another. We really like that brand but again, Amazon has all kinds and I’m sure you can find one that works for your kiddo.
Rollerblades
These rollerblades grow with your kiddo! It’s awesome! Finally someone realized that parents hate buying shoes all.the.time because their kids keep growing!
Bag of balls
Sometimes the simplest things can be the most rewarding. hours of imagination here, in one simple bag.
If you have little ones, then they have a toddler version as well.
Pogo Stick
This pogo stick is for kids 5 and up. And maybe if your 5 year old is taller than most of his classmates. If your kiddo seems to be a bit too small for this one. They also have a foam pogo stick that might be just right for your kiddo. But don’t discount this foam pogo stick, it can hold up to 250 pounds!
Bean bag and cones
My kids love obstacle courses. This is perfect for that. They can use their imagination to set up an obstacle course or just use it to toss the rings on the cones or throw the bean bags into the rings. The possibilities are endless.
Slingshot
I know what you are thinking. That this is not a slingshot. And you may be correct, but this one is much safer and doesn’t hurt. They even sell foam refill balls!
But if you are looking for the old school Daisy Slingshot, Amazon sells that. But know your kid. Show them how to use it properly and what NOT to shoot. Also warn them that shooting owls is against the law. My brother learned that ugly lesson the hard way!
Bow and Arrow
These are so much fun. My only complaint is that they don’t stick like you want them too. It’s a plastic toy and not the real thing. So keep that in mind. This particular one is on sale right now. They are still a little pricey but it comes with 2 bows which is nice when you have a couple kids. 😉
Nerf guns with target
This Nerf Gun set comes with a target that is digital! What! Yes. It comes with the digital target, 2 guns, 2 safety glasses, 2 wristband dart holders and 80 darts! This is awesome. If you don’t already have a gazillion nerf guns like us…add this to your collection!
Pedal Go Kart
When I was a kid we had a real, gas powered go kart. Super dangerous but super fun. We crashed it a few times. We were probably too young for one. These are much safer. They are on the smaller side and not gas powered, but pedal powered. 😉 The age range is 4-8. There is a knob you pull down under the seat to adjust the seat.
Nerf rocket launcher
Nerf rockets are fun. This comes with 6 rockets. The “balloon bag” that you step on is made well. You won’t feel like you are going to pop it. It shoots pretty far. The aim isn’t the best and sometimes they go where they shouldn’t. But sometimes that is part of the fun.
Fairy garden kit
Fairy garden kits are so magical and promote such great imaginary play. There are many ways to have a fairy garden. The picture above is an all in one fairy house with small “garden”.
Here are mini figures that you can put in your garden which is super cute!
Then they have cute decorations that you can put on a tree to promote imaginary play. So many options!!
Large toy trucks
Large toy trucks that the kids can get on their knees and push around are the best. There are many options for this type of toy. Tonka Truck makes a big yellow metal one that is awesome. Or if you are looking for some small construction trucks there are small ones for small hands.
Plastic pedal car for toddlers
Our little guy LOVED this dino car. He played with it inside mostly. The lower level of our house was large enough for him to roll around and not run into too many things. 😉 There is a black plastic bottom that can be removed for their feet. He wasn’t quite ready for pushing with his feet when we got it. But after a couple of months he got the hang of it and was unstoppable after that.
Bouncy ball with handle
We have several of these. When you are ordering them, watch the age range. If your kiddo is 8 but the size of a 12 year old, get the ball for 12 year olds. The ones that we have all feel like the kids are a bit too big for that size, and we have short kids. But they still love to play with them and have races across the yard.
Bubble machine
Bubble machines are so much fun! They really do provide an hour or more of straight joyful running around fun! We’ve had our fair share of bubble machines. We had the ones that blow bubbles and walk, don’t get those. They walk right off the deck, patio or steps and break. Get the one that all you have to do is pour the bubble mix into the bowl, turn on and walk away!
Bonus Cheap Ideas
The items I listed above are fantastic items, but sometimes you just want something cheap to add to a gift basket or small item that you want to be a gift. Whatever it may be, you want something inexpensive. I 100% get it. So here is a list of items that I have gotten from the dollar store that make great gifts as well!
- Bubbles
- Jump rope
- Skip-it
- Fairy garden accessories
- Dinosaurs
- Rocks to paint
- Paint accessories
- Sidewalk chalk
- Dress-up outfits
- Army guys
- Puzzles
- Coloring books and crayons

Wrap-up
That is a GREAT list of outdoor toys for kids that all will promote play in some way. I know that some gifts could be used indoors but it’s ok to bring toys outside. There isn’t a need to separate the toys. If the toys get dirty, have the kids put them through the “car wash”. That also promotes imagination and play as well.
What was your favorite toy to play with outside as a kid? Mine was a jump rope and my barbies.
Thanks for stopping by. Happy Trails.
