Quarry Trail at Red Rock Canyon Open Space

We found a great trail at Red Rock Canyon Open Space. It’s called the Quarry Trail. This trail is along a lake, has you climbing stairs, walking through an old quarry and has outstanding views!

Red Rock Canyon Open Space has many different trails that all weave in and out of each other. Reading the map can be confusing. It’s definitely recommended that you bring the map with you, just in case.

Quarry Trail

Below I will break down the trails we took to get to the Quarry, how far we hiked and how long it took 3 kids to hike the trails.

What trails did we take to get to the Quarry?

We started at the middle parking lot. We walked past the bathrooms and started on the Red Rock Canyon Trail. If you are looking at the map, the trail is white.

We took that trail past the bike park area and past the last parking lot. Continue up the trail until you get to the covered sitting area. The first picture on this post is what it looks like.

Take the path near the lake. (The trail is now green on the map) Follow this path until you get the quarry trail sign. Pictured above.

Now you’ll be on the Quarry Pass Trail. (On the map this trail is blue) This is where you’ll climb up the stairs and enjoy the quarry. Once you get to the top, go left. Look right, then go up again, then straight. You’ll go around the rocks, you’ll then see the trail again.

Take that trail to Greenlee Trail until it meets up with Mesa trail. (Both of those trails are green on the map)

Mesa Trail will take you back to the parking lot.

Where are the ‘stairs’?

The ‘stairs’ were the best part of this trail. I didn’t tell the kids that they were going to climb ‘rock stairs’ because I didn’t know if the research I did would be correct. Man did it pay off!!!

The stairs are located on the Quarry Pass Trail. As you get to the end of the Red Rock Canyon Path, there is a sign that says Quarry trail pointing to the right. Take that trail and it leads you to the stairs.

You can opt out of the stairs and hike around it. That option is to the left of the stairs. Or you can fearlessly climb the stairs like my kids did.

Once you get to the top of the stairs that is where the quarry is located.

How far was the hike and long did it take?

We are not fast hikers. Like AT ALL. I often say that we are a circus walking through the forest. We are loud and slow! They stop and look at everything. Sometimes they wander to go look at something. They take breaks. A lot of them. Then sometimes they run like maniacs.

This hike took about 1 1/2 hours. It was about 2 miles long. It might actually be a tad bit shorter, but like I said…. they wander.

Our overall thoughts of the Quarry Trail at Red Rock Canyon Open Space

This was a great hike. The kids did complain alllll the way until we got to the stairs. Then after that it was all laughs and fun after.

When we went, it was June and about 10am. It was HOT. I suggest going earlier to beat the heat. Overall it was a fantastic hike. The kids really loved it, even though they complained about the heat.
