Family Adventure on Weston Pass

We took a jeep ride on Weston Pass a couple weeks ago. Our campsite was in Leadville and thought that it would be an easy ride to the top and back.

We chose not to complete the whole trail. Since we were staying in Leadville that would mean that we would have to back track across the whole trail again or go all the way around the mountains. We opted to go to the top and come back.

The Weston Pass drive was easy and the scenes were beautiful. Anytime you drive in the mountains it’s beautiful, this was no exception.

Why should you travel on Weston Pass

Why should you travel on the weston pass? Because it is beautiful! And it’s an easy trail that you can drive on in the mountains. No hiking required to reach the top. You have mountains surrounding you while on the drive. We have video of us on the trail. Take a look for yourself.

Weston Pass

Weston Pass Trail Conditions

Trail conditions are always helpful.

Weston Pass is a gravel road that was super easy for us to drive on. Our Jeep has a 2 inch lift on 35 inch tires. While we were on the trail, we saw several stock looking vehicles that did just fine.

There is a side road (FSR 150) that we went on that might require a little ground clearance as it was MUCH rockier.

Weston Pass Points of Interest

  • Picnic spot/camping spots
  • Creek access
  • Air down places…incase you think you need it or forget
  • Wildlife viewing
Picnic spot on Weston Pass

Picnic Spot

There are several spots that you can pull off for a picnic or even to camp. There is a large picnic area with benches on the left of the road adjacent from the creek.

We are creek lovers and adventure seekers. So opting for a regular picnic spot is not in our wheelhouse. We drove a little further down the road and on the left there was a circle-like driveway that we pulled into.

It ended up being a campsite…but the perfect spot for us!

The site backed up to the creek. I’m sure there were other sites that had creek access, but this is the only one we stopped at. We had lunch then explored the area.

Creek along Weston Pass

Creek access

YES! This road is alongside a creek for a little bit. At the beginning of Weston Pass, where we turned off to air down, we explored the creek along the road. We also ran into some ants, well, the biggest ant hill i’d ever seen.

Then at our lunch spot we had creek access and it was so beautiful!

Pull offs

Yes. There were a couple designated pull off areas that you could utilize if needed.

Wildlife on Weston Pass

Wildlife viewing

We saw lots of chipmunks and marmots. LOTS! That is usually the extent of our wildlife views while we are on trails. But we were lucky enough to spot a young female elk. It was a bit odd that she was by herself. She was VERY skittish of us Which is a good thing. 😉

Weston Pass Downfalls

Ants! You’re thinking…really Heather…that’s not a big deal. Well friend, lemme tell you a quick story.

I hoped out of the Jeep to film David driving. I wasn’t watching where my hands were because I was watching him and trying not to get ran over. After he passed me, my free hand felt like it was on fire! I looked down and my hand was covered in ants. No joke!

I dropped the camera and started dancing around because now my arms and feet were burning. Needless to say in a small amount of time I was covered in ants and they were trying to eat me.

Other than the ants, the trail is perfect.
