Camping in Leadville

We just got back from camping in Leadville. We were there for a week of family adventure! It was awesome to say the least.

There are a lot of outdoor activities to do there. We camped the week after the big Leadville races. And when we were leaving there must have been another event because mountain bikers were everywhere!

We went on a lot of off-road trails with our Gladiator while we were camping in Leadville. We really enjoy going on back roads that are too hard for your average Honda to go on.

The scenery is magnificent up in the mountains. We passed many other Jeepers along the way and as many brave hikers too.

Below is a list of campgrounds we found in Leadville. There might be more, please let us know if we missed some.

Campgrounds in Leadville

Leadville RV Corral

This campground looks like a tiny house RV park. This isn’t our style so we didn’t consider it. Their website mentions full-hookups!

Turquoise Lake Campgrounds

These campgrounds are located around Turquoise Lake. We did not stay at any of these. But we did drive by some and through some. The campgrounds we drove through were very well kept, no trash anywhere, vaulted toilets available, and most people had generators. There was a wide variety of rigs in the campgrounds too. While driving through the campgrounds we saw tents, travel trailers, large 5th wheels and truck campers.

We chose NOT to stay on the lake due to the fact they don’t have any hook-ups. We were planning on RV camping in Leadville for a week. That is too long, for us, to not have any sewer. We have 13 gallon tanks… it doesn’t last us long.

Below is a list of the campgrounds around the lake. All, but Painter Boy, have self service pay stations. I provided the campground links, just click on the name of the campground to find out more about it.

*Painter Boy is a group campground and it appears that a reservation is needed.

Sugar Loafin’ Campground

This is where we stayed! And we loved it. We were in spot 45 which is at the end of Last Road. The spot was large (we have a 23 foot camper, so this might not be saying much 😉 ) with a picnic table and fire ring. Oh, and the best part… full panorama views of mountains from our camper windows! It was so pretty. And full hook-up, for tiny tanks!

Their website has a map of the campground. It was super helpful when making reservations.

We love walking around the campgrounds that we stay at. The tent area was my favorite. The tent pads were literally in the woods. It was so pretty.

Pros of Sugar Loafin – Beautiful setting, chipmunks and prairie dogs (our daughters favorite), full hook-ups, clean bathrooms, friendly staff and ice cream!

Cons – It’s a popular place, the playground could use an update (but it was still usable and not dangerous), the grass was getting a bit too high and needed weed whacking.

Frequently Asked Questions

Absolutely YES! There is a lot to do there. We mainly went on Jeep trails while we were there. There is also Ski Cooper super close if you like to ski in the winter.

We didn’t see a sign that said no swimming. This website said you can, but I wouldn’t. It’s WAY too cold!

Wrap up

If you want to RV camp in the woods, visit Turquoise Lake. If you want full hook-ups, then Leadville RV Corral or Sugar Loafin are your best campgrounds in Leadville.

Tent campers that like a woodsy setting would enjoy camping at Turquoise Lake or Sugar Loafin.
