Where is Lake Whitney

Lake Whitney is an actual lake in the middle of Texas about 45 minutes North of Waco. We RV camped at Lake Whitney State Park.

Lake Whitney is part of the Texas State Parks. Texas has some beautiful parks through out the state. When we stayed in Amarillo, we also stayed in another State Park called Palo Duro Canyon. It was beautiful! The picture on the State Park website doesn’t do it justice. It’s gorgeous.

Why RV camp at Lake Whitney

When I was doing research looking for RV campgrounds near Waco, I was finding a great deal of places to camp. I was trying to keep my costs as low as possible. Knowing that we have several other trips planned this year, I didn’t want to spend too much on this trip.

We usually don’t go to touristy places. But Waco is a place I’ve wanted to visit for many years. I wanted to see the town that I’ve watched on TV. And to see if I can score some awesome Magnolia stuff for the house. (Spoiler, I only bought a hat, it was so windy I couldn’t control my hair from going all over the place. Nothing was purchased for the house, everything was expensive, or maybe I’m just cheap…)

I know from doing hours upon hours of campground research that State Parks are usually affordable places to camp. Well… most campers know this, so those spots fill up fast. We booked our reservations as soon as the booking window opened. Scored an amazing camping spot for just $26 a night with full hook-ups! Man what a deal!

How much does it cost

To get into the State Park there is a $5 fee for anyone 13 and older. We are a family of 5 and have a 3 kiddos. Only 1 child is older than 13. This meant that the entrance fee each day for our family was $15. $15 times 7 days is $105… just to get into the park everyday while were there.

Camping fees are $26 a night which was $182 for our stay.

The State Park does offer a Park Pass for $70. We bought that to save us $35. AND we also stayed at Palo Duro Canyon State Park on our way to and from Lake Whitney. So it saved us even more.

If you are looking to try and go to Gas Monkey it is about 2 hours from Lake Whitney. That might be a super long day, or a fantastic adventure for you and the family.

If you are looking for Jeep parts/accessories we HIGHLY recommend Rebel Off Road! We, of course, picked up another Jeep part while there. They were super helpful and very friendly. The boys LOVED looking at all the Jeeps that they had out front too.
