RV camp at Palo Duro Canyon State Park

Palo Duro Canyon State Park is an amazing, beautiful State Park South of Amarillo Texas. We camped here twice on our Texas trip in the Spring. Palo Duro Canyon has several campgrounds and this place happened to be a half way point for us on our way to Lake Whitney. We decided to RV camp at Palo Duro Canyon.

Where is Palo Duro Canyon State Park

This State Park is located in the panhandle of Texas. Being from Florida and having another state say they have a panhandle is odd. 😉

Palo Duro is located South of Amarillo. The name of the place gives it away. This park is in a canyon. The second largest to be exact. The picture on their website doesn’t do this place justice. Driving into the canyon is breath taking!

Why RV camp at Palo Duro Canyon

I didn’t set out to stay at this campground. It wasn’t a “destination” that I was seeking nor did I know about it.

We were headed to Waco, TX for a Spring trip. (Being that we live in Colorado, I was sssooo ready for some warmer weather…which we didn’t get!) Amarillo was our half way point to Lake Whitney.

Some of the amazing features the park has to offer, and our favorites are, the environment, campsites, rocks/boulders to climb on, trails to explore, breath taking views and the amazing sunrise.

We didn’t get to stay long enough to experience them all to the fullest, but we do plan on going back!

How much does it cost

To get into the State Park there is a $5 fee for anyone 13 and older. We are a family of 5 and have a 3 kiddos. Only 1 child is older than 13. This meant that the entrance fee each day for our family was $15. $15 times 2 days is $30… just to get into the park while were there.

Camping fees are $26 a night which was $52 for our stay.

The State Park does offer a Park Pass for $70. We bought that to save us money on the nights here and at Lake Whitney.

What can you do there

  • RV camp
  • Tent camp
  • Fully furnished Glamping Tent rentals
  • Hiking, biking and equestrian trails (yes your horse can go camping with you)
  • Trading post with meals and snacks
  • They have a birding checklist of the birds in the park
  • Rise up early and watch the sunrise
  • Take an evening walk and look for wild life
  • Climb on boulders, our favorite!

Camping amenities

  • RV camp sites that have electric and water.
  • Tent sites
  • Restrooms with showers
  • 2 dump stations
  • Visitor Center/Trading Post
  • Onsite Restaurant

Let me just talk about the campsites at this place. When you camp as much as we do, you appreciate some amenities more than others… like covered picnic tables, clean restrooms and shady trees. Palo Duro has all of that! BUT… they also have thorny bushes/trees and critters that some aren’t fans of. If you are camping with kids, you might want to have the “watch your surroundings” talk. 😉

Frequently Asked Questions

Palo Duro Canyon has electric and water hook ups with 2 dump stations conveniently located along the road. They are not full hook-up sites.

We have Verizon and we didn’t have any cell service at all. We even saw a lady holing her phone up in the air trying to get a signal. But the canyon is basically a hole in the ground…

Yes. You can even RV camp at Palo Duro Canyon

Yes, just not in the buildings.

I’m going to go out on a limb here and say no. When we were there, both times, there was a burn ban in effect. And also on the State Park map, it also states that there is a burn ban in effect. So since it’s on the map, like printed on the map, not a stamp, I’m going to say no wood, pellet or charcoal burning fires.
