Planning Your Fall RV Trip
When you are planning your fall RV trip, what questions run through your mind?
Mine are:
- What do we want to see or do?
- Where do we want to go?
- Do we want to chase the fall colors?
- Does it get below freezing at that location?
- Will it possibly snow while we are there?
- What clothes and gear will we need?
- What additional items do I need to pack?

Location Location Location…
Where do you want to go? What do you want to see? What type of feeling or experience do you want to have?
Are you going to chase the fall colors down the east coast? Do you want to go apple or pumpkin picking with your kids? Are you wanting to experience a fall festival with hay rides, pumpkin painting and bobbing for apples?
Once you have an idea of where you want to go and the experience you want to have, next, how long is it going to take you to get there? Are you going to need to take days off? Can you make it there, pulling your trailer, in one day?

What is the weather going to be like?
Does it get below freezing at that location? Will it possibly snow while you are there? Does it rain often? Or does the destination you choose not get cool at all in the fall?
Fall weather, in most areas, is unpredictable. It could be a warm fall day, then in a matter of minutes it could bring rain, hail and cold weather. While it’s hard to plan for the weather in the fall, it’s always good to check the weather for your destination, often!
Have you ever looked up “What’s the weather like in <destination> in October?” I do this often. It gives me an idea of what the weather might be like at the time of my trip.
It’s a sunny September day here in Colorado. Right now in RMNP it’s 73 degrees and about to rain. So this isn’t always correct. But it can at least give you a guideline.
If the night time weather will be below freezing we’ll have to drain the water from the RV tank and unhook the water hose. This is so the water doesn’t freeze in the pipes. We’ve witnessed a fellow camper who spent a couple hours in the morning trying to thaw out their hoses.
If you are planning a trip to Texas or Florida, you may not be too worried about the weather since it’s warm there most of the time.
What do we need to pack?
What clothes and gear will you need? Will there be additional items that you might need to pack based on the weather?
We leave next week to take a trip into RMNP. The plan is to pack for 3 seasons! We plan on bringing our winter coats, boots, gloves and hats. Why? Because while looking at the 10 day forecast it will be in the 40’s in the morning.
Then we also plan on packing shorts and t-shits as well. Why? Because the highs will be in the 70’s. The forecast also calls for rain, so we’ll need rain coats and probably extra shoes. I have 3 kids that LOVE rain puddles.
This does cause extra packing. We have to cram extra jackets and boots into the already tiny camper. But, it’s well worth it, even if we don’t have to use it all. I’d rather be over prepared than someone crying because they are cold and wet.

Wrapping up on planning your fall RV trip
When you are planning your fall RV trip, there are a few questions that you need to ask yourself.
- Where are we going?

Always pack jackets just in case the weather turns. Maybe even gloves and hats. You never know what Mother Nature will throw at you.
