Family Adventure Guide: Where to camp, play, hike and explore Part 2

Where to camp, play, hike and explore in Woodland Park, Colorado! Family Adventure Guide Part 2 of 5 in this series!

If you haven’t read Part 1, you need to do that!

I have searched countless times for “family friendly camping in Colorado” or “family friendly hikes in Colorado Springs” or “kid friendly off-road trails” only to turn up empty handed and nothing in my notebook of “Great Ideas.”

In this 5 part series of our Colorado Springs (And surrounding area) Family Adventure Guide, I am going to outline a good place to camp with kids, a great playground that feels safe, a family-friendly hike and an off-road trails that the kids will love!

Most of these locations (In part 2) will be in Woodland Park. Those of you that have been hanging around us for a while know that we LOVE Woodland Park & Green Mountains Falls.

Where to Camp in Woodland Park

Diamond Campground is a favorite of ours. We have stayed there many times since we moved to Colorado Springs. The weather is always beautiful and we’ve rarely had to turn on our campers A/C.

The campground is clean, well kept and we feel safe in this area. We’ve seen many deer here and they have even walked through our camp site.

This campground is closed for the winter. Check the dates before you plan your trip.

Woodland Park one of our favorite little mountain towns. We truly love every part of this town.

Where to Play in Woodland Park

Memorial Park is our MOST favorite park. The playground is nice, fishing is good, open area to play is amazing and the bathrooms are always clean. The water is cold though… just a heads up.

We’ve been here in the winter, spring, summer and fall. The winter was especially fun to play on the large piles of snow, slide down the slide full of snow, roll around and make snow angels. There is also a good sledding hill, but you will end up on the frozen pond, which makes it’s extra fun.

The neighborhood deer like to visit the park as well. We’ve seen many deer in the park. We just walk around them and they don’t mind. We have seen people try to feed them and the deer will run off or sometime gets crabby. Don’t be THAT guy.

We’ve had lunch and dinner here many times. We’ll get one of the gazebos and cook dinner or have sandwiches. The kids will play, eat, play and play some more. We always have a great time here!

Where to Hike in Woodland Park

Red Rocks Trail is a MUST stop when you are in Woodland Park. Once you pull onto the street there is a parking area to the right, keep driving. There will be a fork in the road, stay right. Pass that parking area. Look up and find the telephone wires, park under them in a small parking lot on the right.

There is a trail that starts there. Once a couple yards into the trail, you’ll see a teepee to the left. Go in and explore. It’s cute. Back on the trail you’ll come upon the red rocks. Go explore.

Once you are full of adventure and lost, look up to find the telephone wires, follow them back to your car. 😉

There are no bathrooms at this trail.

Where to Explore near Woodland Park

Rule Ridge Trail is a great kid friendly off-road trail. We’ve completed this trail in a Gladiator and my Jeep Commander. The video linked above, we did this trail in my Commander.

The scenery changes from in the forest to an open area where they might be a water crossing, depending on the time of year you go. We’ve also stopped and let Luna, and the kids, play and run around.

At the beginning of the trail there is a large parking lot where you can unload and load your side by sides. There is also a vaulted toilet there. Most of the time it’s clean. Girls pack extra toilet paper, in case they are out.

Copy and paste the GPS Coordinates for this trail into OnX, GAIA or Google Maps to get directions to the trail head. 39.00239, -105.16414
