Where to camp, play, hike and explore in Colorado Springs, Colorado! Family Adventure Guide Part 5 of 5 in this series!
If you haven’t read Part 1, Part 2, Part 3 or Part 4, you should do that!
I have searched countless times for “family friendly camping in Colorado” or “family friendly hikes in Colorado Springs” or “kid friendly off-road trails” only to turn up empty handed and nothing in my notebook of “Great Ideas.”
In this 5 part series of our Colorado Springs (And surrounding area) Family Adventure Guide, I am going to outline a good place to camp with kids, a great playground that feels safe, a family-friendly hike and an off-road trails that the kids will love!
Where to Camp in Colorado Springs
Cheyenne Mountain State Park is the BEST place to camp in Colorado Springs! The camping spots are paved, level, full hook-ups and cheap! With this being said… It’s hard to get a spot, so book early! (There is a daily fee associated with the State Parks system, which is about $10 a day. )
Amenities:
- Lodging options: Cabin rentals and RV & tent spots
- Can accommodate large rigs (there are spots that can accommodate over 40 foot rigs)
- Playground
- Laundry
- Coin showers
- Hiking trails
Where to Hike in Colorado Springs
Keeping with the theme of Cheyenne Mountain State Park, there are several hiking trails in the park. There are strict rules where you can bring your dog. The trails near the campgrounds, your pup can go on with you. But everywhere else, no dogs allowed.
Our favorite hike is Zook Loop & Medicine Wheel. It’s the most shaded and the ranger recommended them for kids who melt. 😉
Bonus is when you get to see some deer on the trail with you too.
Where to Play in Colorado Springs
There are several playgrounds in the park. We’ve played on 2 of the 3. The playgrounds are for small. I usually make up a ninja course for them and they race against themself for a better “time” or each other. The playground equipment is well built. I don’t feel like they will fall apart if my teen goes down the slide.
Where to Explore in Colorado Springs
An easy off-road trail in Colorado Springs is Gold Camp/Old Stage Coach. It’s really just a bumpy dirt road, but if you aren’t from here, or prefer a scenic drive, this is it.
