Family Adventure On Hell Creek Road
Family fun adventure on Hell Creek road!!! Or another name for the road is Schubarth Loop, or Forest Service Road 307 or 311… whatever you’d like to call it! This adventure was great! We completed one side of the loop this time around. We have previously completed the whole loop. This time we wanted to go up to the look out and explore that area. It was so worth it. The kids had a great time and enjoyed every minute of this trail.
How to get there
As I stated above this trial has several names. In the FunTreks book, the trail is called Schubarth Loop. If you go to GaiaGPS and type in Hell Creek you get the trail highlighted below. It’s the same trail map as Schubath Loop.
The way that we took to get to the trail was Highway 24 to Woodland Park. We turned right on Baldwin street, at the McDonalds. Baldwin turns into Rampart Range Road. Rampart Range Rd curves right, there will be a fork in the road, go right, that is Loy Creek Road. Loy Creek road turns into Schubarth or Forest Service 307… whatever you want to call it. Stay on Schubarth/F.S. 307 until the end. Then go left onto Hell Creek road/F.S. 311/Schbarth…whatever.
We took Hell Creek until it ended. Then we went right. And took that until it ended. Which was at the look out area over the Air Force Academy. This area looks like a big circle with a fire ring in the center.
Once we wandered around a bit we got back into the Jeep and made our way back the way we came.
Key Takeaways
- The boulders are fun to climb on or as you are driving by…. give one a high five. The kids will love it. You drive very very close to some boulders that you can actually stick your hand out and give a boulder a high five.
- There is a spot, almost at the end that is very tight as you weave through the boulders. There is a place you can park and get out to walk around. We HIGHLY recommend exploring the area.
- There are several lunch/camping spots that we found.
- Once you get to the end of Hell Creek, hang right. That will take you to the lookout area. We recommend getting out and wandering a bit.
Trail Conditions
It was early May when we went on the trail this time around. The trail was clear of mud and snow. We really expected it to be a little muddy, but it wasn’t.
There were other people that we passed. We even passed a group of Jeeps that were headed to the end of Hell Creek Road.
Conclusion
This trail was a fun adventure. The boulders were very exciting for all of us. They are so big and fun to climb on. The trail is busy, especially now since it’s much warmer out. It was also dry and the flowers were trying to bloom.
We wore our hiking boots/shoes and didn’t have any footing issues as we climbed over the boulders and wandered around.
